The Govardhan story
In the Krishna tradition, the people of Braj are encouraged to honour the hill, cattle and land that sustain them. Indra sends a fierce storm. Krishna raises Govardhan as shelter, and the villagers gather beneath it for seven days. Indra’s pride subsides, and the community is protected. The story places gratitude, humility and care for living beings at the centre of worship.
What is Annakut?
Annakut is an offering of prepared food, often arranged as a symbolic abundance of nourishment. Temples may prepare many dishes; a household can make a modest, suitable offering. There is no requirement for every family to cook 56 dishes.
A simple household observance
- Prepare a clean space and a symbolic representation of Govardhan using materials appropriate to your custom.
- Arrange freshly prepared vegetarian food as customary, along with water, flowers and a diya.
- Remember Krishna and the protection of Braj. Read the story with children and discuss gratitude for farmers, animals and the environment.
- Offer the food, perform aarti and symbolic circumambulation where practised.
- Share prasad and avoid wasting the food prepared for the offering.
Questions families often ask
Is Govardhan always the day immediately after Diwali?
The traditional sequence is linked to tithis. The 2026 New Delhi dates are Diwali on 8 November and Govardhan Puja on 10 November.
Can we join a temple Annakut?
Yes. Check the temple’s own schedule, which may include community events outside the household puja window.
