Kua Number: Calculate Yours by Date of Birth & Gender
The Kua number — called the Navigator Number in the Destiny Grid system — is the third pillar of your chart after the Mulank and Bhagyank. Unlike them, it uses your birth year and gender, and it points to the energies and directions that naturally support you. Here is the calculation, the meaning of each Kua, and why it matters more than most people realise.

Open the Free CalculatorHow to calculate your Kua number
Step 1: Add all digits of your birth year and reduce to one digit.
Step 2 (male): Subtract from 11, reduce again.
Step 2 (female): Add 4, reduce again.
Male, born 1981: 1+9+8+1 = 19 → 1+9 = 10 → 1. Then 11 − 1 = 10 → Kua 1.
Female, born 1983: 1+9+8+3 = 21 → 3. Then 3 + 4 = Kua 7.
Some Feng Shui schools remap a result of 5 and use a solar-year boundary for January or February births. Destiny Grid follows the direct stored Navigator formula: it can show 5 and always uses the calendar year written in your date of birth. This keeps the calculator and every report consistent.

The hidden role: your Kua inside the Lo Shu Grid
Here is what most Kua calculators never show. In the full Destiny Grid method, your Kua (Navigator) number is placed into your Lo Shu Grid as a support number. If your birth date lacks a number — say 7 — and your Kua is 7, that empty box gets filled: a hidden activation that changes how your whole grid reads, sometimes even completing a success line. This is why the same birth date can behave differently for a brother and a sister: their Kua numbers differ, so their grids receive different support.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Kua number?
The Kua number (also spelled Gua) comes from Feng Shui and is calculated from your birth YEAR and your GENDER. It is read as your inner compass — the energies and directions that naturally support you. In the Destiny Grid system it is called the Navigator Number and is read alongside your Mulank and Bhagyank.
How do I calculate my Kua number?
Destiny Grid adds the digits of your full birth year and reduces them to one digit. For males, subtract that digit from 11 and reduce again. For females, add 4 and reduce again. Example — male born 1981: 1+9+8+1 = 19 → 1; 11 − 1 = 10 → Navigator 1. Female born 1983: 1+9+8+3 = 21 → 3; 3 + 4 = Navigator 7. This direct formula can return 5 and uses the calendar birth year for every month.
Why is the Kua number different for men and women?
The formula follows the traditional yin-yang flow of energy, which is mapped differently for male and female charts. Two twins of different genders born the same day get different Kua numbers and different supportive directions.
What are the East and West groups?
Kua numbers 1, 3, 4 and 9 form the East group; 2, 6, 7 and 8 form the West group. A direct result of 5 is treated as a center or special case in Destiny Grid, so its directions need a tradition-specific review. Your group indicates directions traditionally considered supportive for sleeping, working and important tasks.
Is the Kua number more important than Mulank?
They answer different questions. Mulank describes your personality, Bhagyank your life direction, and Kua your supportive energies and directions. Destiny Grid reads all three together — the Kua (Navigator) can even fill an empty box in your Lo Shu Grid, acting as hidden support most single-number calculators never detect.
