This guide explains what your Name Number (Namank) is, how it is calculated in the Chaldean system, which totals are considered lucky, and — the part most calculators skip — why the right name for you depends on the numbers in your own date of birth.

What is a Name Number?

Every letter of the alphabet is linked to a number. Add the numbers for all the letters in your name and reduce the sum to a single digit, and you get your Name Number — often called Namank in Vedic numerology. Where your birth numbers describe who you are, your Name Number describes how you are received: the reputation, recognition and opportunities your name attracts. Two people with identical birth dates can live very different public lives, and the spelling of the name is one reason why.

How it is calculated (Chaldean system)

Destiny Grid uses the Chaldean system — the older of the two main methods, and the one the legendary numerologist Cheiro is associated with. In Chaldean numerology, letters are assigned values from 1 to 8. The number 9 is considered sacred and is never given to a letter. Here is the full map:

Worked example — the name RAM: R = 2, A = 1, M = 4. Total = 2 + 1 + 4 = 7. So "Ram" carries a Name Number of 7. For a full name, you add every letter of the first name and surname together, then reduce: a total like 41 becomes 4 + 1 = 5. Both the two-digit compound number and the final single digit carry meaning, which is why a good calculator shows you both.

Which Name Numbers are lucky?

As a general rule, the most supportive name totals are 1, 5, 6 and 3:

• 1 (Sun): leadership, fame, a name that stands out and is remembered.
• 5 (Mercury): adaptable and universally liked — the great all-rounder for communication, sales and quick success.
• 6 (Venus): attraction, luxury, comfort and public charm — a strong total for brands and creatives.
• 3 (Jupiter): wisdom, growth, guidance and respect.

Totals of 4 (Rahu) and 8 (Saturn) are usually avoided for a name, because they tend to bring delay and struggle even when the person is capable.

Why the "lucky" number is not the same for everyone
